Jackson County Creature Feature Video Competition Rules

  • Jackson County is hosting a video competition featuring short sci-fi horror videos shot on a smart phone.  Minimum length:  3 minutes.  Maximum length: 12 minutes.  

  • Video story-lines are to revolve around a water creature, utilizing the style of the 1950s sci-fi horror films complete with a beginning, middle, and end.  

  • All videos are to feature one or more Jackson County waterways.  All primary footage (A-roll) of exterior scenes must be shot in Jackson County.  Interior scenes and B-roll footage can be shot anywhere.

  • All submitted videos shall be rated PG.

  • All videos are to be recorded using a smart phone.  No footage shot with other cameras allowed.  Editing is permitted.  Adding non-copyrighted music and special effects are also permitted.

  • Only use non-copyrighted music.  You can find royalty-free music from many sources such as Snapmuse as well as YouTube and FB Creator Studio.  You are welcome to write your own music.  All music sources must be disclosed with the submission of the video link.

  • Participants are encouraged to shoot their videos horizontally rather than vertically.

  • Participants do not have to be from Jackson County, but all exterior primary footage must be filmed in Jackson County. All exterior shot locations need to be disclosed with the submission of the video link.

  • Amateurs, as well as movie buffs, are encouraged to enter videos.

  • Participants assume all liability/risk while filming. 

  • Participants are to follow Leave No Trace guidelines in regards to respecting habitats and wildlife.

  • The Pascagoula River Audubon Center in Moss Point will host a viewing of The Creature from the Black Lagoon on Saturday, October 30th at 10 AM. No charge to attendees.

  • Rules will be available on the Jackson County website for those not able to attend the Lagoon showing.  Questions can be addressed to Barb Medlock with Jackson County at 228-332-0823.

  • An instructional video for contestants will be made by WGUD and will be available to all.

  • Videos must be submitted no later than midnight on Jan. 5, 2022.  Videos may be submitted earlier.  To submit your video, upload it on YouTube using the privacy setting.  Send an email to barbara_medlock@co.jackson.ms.us with the link to view the video.  Include the locations where the exterior primary shots were made as well as the source of where any music was obtained.  Any music used must be royalty-free.

  • The top 5 videos will be announced mid-January.

  • A Creature Feature event will be held at the Pascagoula River Audubon Center in Moss Point in late January/early February where the top videos will be played and the winning video will be announced and prizes awarded.

  • Only the top video will receive prizes (Creature Feature award, dinner gift certificate, charter sunset cruise, free kayaking, tickets to various Jackson County attractions, and more).

  • The judges will also award recognition for:   Best Creature, Best Storyline, Best Cast, and Best Cinematography.

  • The top chosen videos will be aired on WGUD/After Hours Cinema.

  • Judges for the competition will be Tim Wall and Hunter Bickham of Wall & Bickham Entertainment and Lee Turner of After Hours Cinema.
